Sun expands to engulf MySQL

Yesterday Sun announced it was purchasing MySQL for $800 million. Not bad for an open source - based company, but then again, MySQL has quite a name.

Robin Miller of Linux.com posted a news article and video clip interviewing officers of Sun and MySQL - including the inventor of Java James Grosling and MySQL creator Monty Widenius.

Old Unix Guys warning - several individuals in the video are obviously Old Unix Guys. OUGs often feature bald heads, long strands of whatever hair is left, awkward to condescending social skills, and a tendency to bash operating systems based on something called "New Technology (NT)". Luckily, these guys in the video seem to be friendly, although that may be because they are on their home turf.

Okay, first of all THANK YOU for the OUG warning.

So what is PostgresSQL? I heard them ask about it. Do they have any relation to MySQL, or is it a completely independent company?

Also, I love the second segment where the guy doing the interview has on a wrinkled, unbuttoned shirt on over his huge yellow T-shirt.

And thank you, Jesus! I get to hear the original developer of MySQL pronounce his own creation correctly. A bit of handy info for the next time I hear someone pronounce it as if they've made a movie about the second part of their life (My-sequel). That's a pet peeve of mine for some reason.

And did I hear correctly? MySQL, Apache, Rails, and Solaris... nice

PostgresSQL is a separate product and company, but they both have open source roots and a heavy linux history.

Ironically, I listened to a podcast the other day where Linus Torvalds was interviewed. As you probably know historically there has always been a debate about the pronunciation of "linux" - purists say that since it was named after Linus it is pronounced like "lie - nix". But in this interview Linus himself called it Linux like the rest of us mere mortals! So now the case is closed.

Hal and I got our hands inside a new Sun T2000 server today - it was sweet.... 8 cores on a single processor baby!
